Séance with Eggshell

2004 | oil and acrylic paint, ink and eggshell on canvas | 148 × 149 cm

Harry van der Woud – who paints himself into his work as multiple clones – is interested in how we enter into dialogue with the world around us.

At a seance, people try to communicate with the dead and make the deceased person’s presence felt. Van der Woud has given that his own twist by making the dish on the table out of real eggshell. It’s presence isn’t painted. It’s real.
