Even though she is a portrait painter, Katinka Lampe wants to avoid all that is personal in her art. She says she tries to paint herself out of her paintings.
By including things like a wig or putting a lot of make-up on the model's mouth, she gives her portraits – which always have a number, but no name – an unusual or artificial touch. The result is somewhere between realistic and abstract: not an exact copy of reality but a visual impression of it instead.
