There’s more to the tulip in this picture by Elspeth Diederix than meets the eye: its stripes were painted by hand.

The photographs in this series recall the long tradition of floral still lifes, which Diederix sees as creating the illusion of reality. The title of this work refers to Jacob Marrel, a German still life painter who worked in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age. In addition to flower paintings, he is also known for his tulip books, with their many illustrations of striped tulips.
