Roger Raveel (1921-2013)
Barely escaped
1970 | oil paint on canvas | 150 × 115 cm
Roger Raveel likes to pull the viewer into his paintings by not telling the whole story. We have to use our imagination.
The title of this painting refers to the cat that escaped by a hair from the wheels of a bicycle when crossing the road. All we see are its tail and one back paw, on the bottom left of the composition. The rest of its body is cut off by the canvas. This visual trick sets the picture in motion. Raveel's wife Zulma modelled as the older woman on the bike.
