1996 | acrylic on canvas | 98 × 108 cm

Kenne Grégoire paints still lifes and scenes inspired by daily life, but his work has the curious effect of feeling old and new at the same time.

He uses a technique from the 17th century where thin layers of colour are glazed over a greyish base. This creates brightness. And his use of colour is influenced by the light and transparent hues of Italian frescos. His unconventional compositions, on the other hand, seem very modern. Such as in this still life, where the strangely draped tablecloth takes up more than half of the canvas.
