David Haines
Composition (Two Peonie Roses in a Green Vase)
2025 | Oil on linen | 60 × 50 cm
The flower is typically seen as one of art’s most benign subjects. One celebrated, for instance, in 17th century floral still lifes. Haines challenges this assumption by disrupting its conventional associations and literally blurring its boundaries. The flowers gesture toward attempts at care, tenderness, and mourning, yet remain elusive. For this piece, Haines used the roses he saved after his mother’s passing.
