Diana's Funeral K
2000 | Acrylic on canvas | 174 x 244 x 4 cm
This large-scale painting is one in a series called Diana’s Funeral made over a period of a few years following Diana’s death in 1997.
With the blurry TF1 logo on the left, it is easy to identify the reference image as a television image. The checked pattern is the tile floor of Westminster Abbey, where Diana’s funeral was held. The artist, at the time of this event, was living in Los Angeles where she was influenced by the odd overlap between real life and the world of film and television. Her paintings are not meant to be direct representations of images; they are canvases on which the artist explores the more visceral and personal responses that arise from viewing impactful world events through the prism of projected televised images.
