Five

1964 | oil paint on canvas | 205 × 125 cm

Hans Koetsier’s Five from 1964 depicts a partially visible, diagonal number five. He takes a simple graphic design and literally gives it a new twist.

Koetsier started out in advertising before moving on to create paintings with silk-screen prints consisting of figures or fragments of figures. In the 1960s Koetsier joined the international Fluxus movement, which placed the artistic process above the final result. One of the main goals of the Fluxus artists was to bring together art and everyday life, blending different artistic media and disciplines.
