Freefall

2016 | archival ink on rag paper | 100 × 150 cm

During a free fall, when do you really let go? This moment happens so fast that it cannot be seen by the human eye. Tom Callemin is interested in this fleeting moment, which he captures with his camera instead. He finds it intriguing that all control is lost during a free fall. So what happens if the free fall is directed by a photographer?

Callemin wanted to capture the model’s motion for this photograph, which is why it’s partly out of focus. In no way whatsoever do his photos refer to any particular time or place, which means that his work remains timeless and is able to take on greater meaning.
