Anneke van Brussel (1949)
Ginger Jar
1994 | oil paint on board | 41 × 51 cm
The work of Anneke van Brussel tells an intimate and subtle story. Often depicting symbolic objects, they are poems in paint.
Van Brussel often paints still lifes in the form of lace handkerchiefs and children’s dresses pinned to the wall. Broken eggshells, feathers, saucers, shells and withered flowers are also the subject of her paintings. Van Brussel’s origins in painting in water colour, with thousands of tiny brush strokes, are still perceivable in this Chinese ginger jar.
