Corneille (1922-2010)

Grassland

1972 | lithograph | 26 × 20 cm

The ‘joy of movement’, as he called it, was a main theme not only in Corneille’s work but also in his life.

Corneille was the most well-travelled of the CoBrA artists, and he found much inspiration for his work abroad. By happy coincidence, he discovered artists Paul Klee and Joan Miró in reproduction while at a bookshop in Budapest. Their influence can be seen by the round, organic form of the bird in this work, and the vibrant colour.
