Hercules with Hydra I

1966 | bronze | 130 × 170 × 100 cm

The mythological figures in the work of Nic Jonk represent divine grace and power. By sculpting them as voluptuous and portly, he brings them down to earth.

One of the Twelve Labours of Hercules was to slay the nine-headed Hydra. Whenever Hercules cut off a head, two grew back. He finally succeeded by using fire to sear up the serpent’s necks and placing the final head, which was immortal, under a great rock.
