House of Cards

1993 | oil paint on board | 37 × 37 cm

In this work, Matthijs Röling creates an unconventional still life by placing his objects – including a house of cards – among remnants of an old Roman wall. Is there a hidden meaning here?

Traditional still lifes, especially before 1700, were full of symbolism. They could often be read like a book. However, this is of no concern to Röling. He does not choose any particular theme for his paintings. He paints what he finds beautiful. Seen as the figurehead of contemporary Dutch figurative painting, Röling was one of the founders of Northern Realism, around the city of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands.
