How to stop whining and start living

2005 | watercolour on paper | 187 × 212 cm

William Monk creates art from images found in newspapers, magazines and online media. He admits that even he gets confused when trying to put them together.

The title of this work is a variation on How to Make Trouble and Influence People, a book about subversion and political pranks in Australia. Monk contrasts that with the harmonious circle of respectable people in nineteenth-century garb who seem to be celebrating the birth of a new society.
