For Implicit Recordings, Barbara Wijnveld certainly ran a very special kind of tape across her work: cassette tape. The cassette contains recordings of Barbara’s own voice: singing, talking or making noises. Her voice is not the only thing that figures indirectly in this work. The portrait is also partly a self-portrait. Barbara chose to use reflective cassette tape so that the viewer could see the portrait and themselves at the same time.

Barbara combined drawings of herself with a drawing that she had made of Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. The drawings form the basis of her painting, as she explores not only herself and an iconic work of art but also the concept of ‘nothing is what it seems’.
