Mona Hatoum (1952)
Keffieh II
2008 | cannetille embroidery on organza silk | 120 x 120 cm
At first glance, this work appears light, soft and airy. Its embroidery, however, tells a different story.
Created by Mona Hatoum, who is of Palestinian origin, Keffieh II is modelled after a Palestinian scarf. The steel wire used to embroider it forms a stark contrast to the piece’s delicate organza silk. It could indicate the borders that are being drawn under our very eyes through this delicate landscape.
