Marianne Aartsen (1950)
Kore
1996 | bronze | 160 × 36 × 21 cm
The rough, cement-coloured patina of this work in bronze by Marianne Aartsen gives this ‘classical’ kore an added dimension.
A kore is a type of ancient Greek sculpture from the Archaic period depicting a young female figure. Its face would normally have an emotionless ‘archaic smile’, as a symbol of transcending above the hardships of life. Aartsen’s kore has no head – or arms for that matter. She expresses herself instead through her rough surface, or skin.
