In this still life by Mario ter Braak with flowers arranged like a fan, a traditional hierarchy is reversed.
Normally in a still life, the background would play a supporting role. Here, however, the tablecloth is just as important as the objects on the table. The individual flowers and vase – no longer really a ‘vase of flowers’ – seem to become part of it.
