Georg Baselitz (1938)
Pimpf-Bildachtunddreissig
1995 | Oil on canvas | 290 x 450 cm
Baselitz is above all an artist caught between two conceptions of art, without being able to choose between them: that of the former Eastern Europe and that of the West.
By bringing these two concepts together, he tries to fathom and reconcile them, but remains troubled by profound doubts and questions. By his use of a vivid palette of clashing colours for Pimpf, his work takes a new turn yet again. Its network of interlacing lines indicates Baselitz’s interest in ornament. The painting is mounted in a frame which is aimed at giving the impression that the canvas is not finished. We can make out a head, upside-down, which has been angrily obliterated by the large brushstrokes of the artist.
