Portrait of Jolanthe

1936 | oil paint on canvas | 36 × 31 cm

As the third generation of a prominent family of Dutch artists, Edgar Fernhout had to follow in some big footsteps. It was quite the journey.

The great-grandson of Jan Toorop (1858-1928) and son of Charley Toorop (1891-1955), Fernhout started painting at the age of eleven. Although he received lessons from his mother Charley, Fernhout considered himself as self-taught and eventually developed his own abstract style. This portrait is from when he was still influenced by realistic painting. The soft lines reflect his time spent in Italy.
