Douwe Elias (1952)
Prague I
2006 | oil paint on canvas | 89 × 150 cm
In this warm interior of browns and greys, Douwe Elias uses accents of light to guide our eyes to every corner – to experience what cannot be seen.
This view of a café, which is part of a larger series, came about during a trip to Prague. Elias was not interested in making a genre painting, however. By including several patrons who are almost lost within this historical interior, Elias turns this into a work that’s all about space.
