Red trilogy

2000 | oil paint on canvas | 135 × 110 cm

This portrait by Piet van den Boog is one of those wonderful instances where form and content unite to create a perfect whole.

Is composition is based on prints by 18th-century Japanese artist Utamaro. Van den Boog has long been an admirer of Japanese aesthetics. The person portrayed is Japanese actor, comic, director and author Takeshi Kitano. He once remarked that after writing a script for himself, he would never see it again. Van den Boog has painted some text under Kitano’s right eye.
