Christian Boltanski (1944-2021)
Sans-souci
1991 | 115 framed black and white photograps in metal frames, electric lights and cables | (115 x) 31 x 23 cm
French artist Christian Boltanski calls himself a painter, but he uses neither paint nor canvas in his work.
Boltanski is interested in investigating our ideas of good and evil, particularly in relation to the Second World War. In Sans-souci, 115 photos from an album found at a flea market in Berlin weave together a story of Wehrmacht soldiers and SS officers going about everyday life: a birthday, Christmas, the birth of a baby.
