Pieter Pander works in the figurative tradition, which means he portrays figures and objects from the real world. What could be more real to an artist than his own portrait.

Unlike many others working in the same tradition, Pander uses loose, spontaneous brush strokes. He limits his range of colours: mainly browns, blues, greys and white. These are the colours he’s comfortable with; they convey what he is feeling in a painting. The contrast between the rough and detailed parts of his paintings make his works interesting to see close up as well as from a distance.
