Anneke van Brussel (1949)
Spirited (after Piero della Francesco)
1995 | acrylic on board | 40 × 35 cm
As the title of this work by Anneke van Brussel suggests, creating a magical atmosphere was not the sole domain of the artists of Magic Realism.
This painting was – apart from the feathers – made in the style of Piero della Francesca, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. He was known for the humanistic portrayal of his subjects. And like Van Brussel, he too created an ethereal atmosphere in his paintings through the use of light.
