Frans Clement (1941)
Stakes
1976 | oil paint on canvas | 150 × 152 cm
Judging from the subject of this painting, Clement is a realist. How he presents that reality, however, is nothing short of wondrous.
The idea for this composition came from when the artist saw an interesting looking jumble of stakes strewn across an undeveloped plot. By removing the stakes from their daily context, painting them in monumental size and using dramatic lighting, Clement opens our eyes to the beauty of these everyday objects.
