The artwork of Van Dis is always loaded with mystery, and a brooding sky is rarely lacking. Here, the only presence of a living creature is alluded to by the feathers in the air. Interestingly, the reverse frame – with the decorative moulding on the inside of the painting – recalls a certain style of icons in Orthodox churches.
