Traveller’s Column

1964 | bronze | 255 cm

In his work, Arnaldo Pomodoro expresses himself through basic geometric forms with wedge-like markings that may have been inspired by an ancient language.

Pomodoro is known for his metal spheres, cones, cubes and cylinders whose outside surface is removed to expose their inner workings. In his Traveller’s Column, we could see those insides as the gears of a machine. Civilizations of the Ancient Near East, however, might have seen them as cuneiform, a writing system where wedge-shaped characters were stamped into clay slabs and cylinders.
