2022 | chemicals on canvas | 150 × 130 cm

Where traditional paintings are made with paint, Frank Ammerlaan takes a different approach. He uses materials ranging from dust and dirt to liquid metals and meteorite particles for his paintings. That makes him a modern alchemist of sorts, one who investigates unpredictable processes.

His Chemicals on Canvas series is based on experiments that he conducted with the help of chemists and scientists. He wanted to show the arrangement of colours that would be perceptible in the city on a rainy day – in the form of oil stains.

He starts by making his canvases black with acrylic paint and then places them in a water bath with an unknown mixture of chemicals, from which they emerge with holographic colour effects. The result is a painting where the beauty of nature meets science and technology.
