Richard Deacon (1949)
UW84DC #5
2001 | Ash, wood and aluminium | 111 x 536 x 250 cm
Richard Deacon connects the narrative and the material. Since the 1980s, the artist has been working on an oeuvre in which natural materials and visible techniques are metaphors for human ideas and feelings. Artist and material enter a dialogue with each other thanks to the unconcealed production technique.
The title UW84DC is SMS language for 'You Wait For The Sea'. For Deacon, language is the sea in which we swim, the source of sentences and questions in which we express our thoughts. The work takes on the lines of the waves, while the technique and materials suggest shipbuilding. Natural force and human genius... a language game for Deacon.
