Ad Dekkers (1938-1974)
Variation on a Circle
1967 | polyester | 120 × 120 cm
People have been depicting three-dimensional objects on two-dimensional surfaces ever since cave paintings. Ad Dekkers sees things differently. To him, sculpture is the only way to go.
Dekkers feels it’s impossible to create a real sense of space on a flat surface. Even a simple three-dimensional form is not enough. The only way for him to express himself is through the relief on its surface. In this red polyester variation on a circle, it’s not the shape itself but the play of light and shadow on its grooves that matters.
