Piet van den Boog (1951)
You can only walk with the one who looks you in the eyes
2008 | acrylic, oil paint on black steel | 150 × 130 cm
Piet van den Boog was so impressed when he saw Swedish performance artist Charlotte Wandt's act that he decided to paint her portrait.
In this painting, he placed Charlotte's face between two horizontal bars, leaving the steel background in view. The top bar runs just above Charlotte's eyes, which makes them the focus of the composition. Although it is not clear what Charlotte is looking at, the viewer is practically forced to follow her faraway gaze.
