A Foolish Pleasure in Wicked Schemes

This tapestry combines historical and modern elements in an intriguing way. We see figures from the past grappling with each other, while iconic, classic images like Napoleon on his horse are interwoven with contemporary scenes of young men in brawls. By juxtaposing these images, the artist creates a bridge between different eras. The modern imagery can be recognised by its internet-like speed and randomness, while its historical equivalents often exude sustained precision and craftsmanship.
The presence of the police in their characteristic blue uniforms emphasises the constant friction between order and rebellion. We are invited to think about how power and adventure have been depicted throughout the ages. This work revolves around masculinity. A parallel is often drawn between masculinity and violence. Although we often strive for control, there are times when the raw power of masculinity cannot be contained and overwhelms us.
