Guus Hellegers (1937-2019)
Big One
1987 | serpentine | 90 × 45 × 15 cm
The idea of a flat sculpture may come as a surprise until you learn that its creator Guus Hellegers was also a famous medalist.
A medalist is an artist who engraves and designs medals, coins and similar small works in metal. The same idea of creating a relief on a flat surface can be seen in this sculpture of a grandmother who has dozed off in her chair. The contrast between the sharp, angular arms of the chair and the way her hands gently rest in her lap heightens the effect of human warmth and softness. You can almost feel her gentle presence.
