1956 | drawing/pencil and coloured pencil | 55 × 77 cm

The Friends by Wim Schuhmacher portrays a group of prominent men in Dutch society brought together by adversity, shared cultural interests and the pleasure of each other’s company.

Formed in the first years of the Second World War, the group centred around Joop Odinot, a physician and source of food and shelter for artists in need. The others were relatively well-known writers, an architect, a composer and Schuhmacher himself. To Schuhmacher, it was a time of great, honest friendship. This drawing was made when the group got together eleven years after the war for Odinot’s 60th birthday: friends for life.
