Ietje and Pisanello

2003 | oil paint on board | 60 × 121 cm

Koos van Keulen often pokes fun at famous paintings from the past, such as here with the two faces in profile.

The girl on the left is Ietje Hooisma, who worked at the supermarket where Van Keulen lived and who posed for this painting. The girl on the right is in the style of Portrait of a Young Princess by Pisanello from around 1440. Her hair has been pulled back and eyebrows plucked to create a round, high forehead, a sign of beauty in Renaissance Italy. Here, past and present are looking each other in the eye.
