Karel Appel (1921-2006)
Horizon of Tuscany n° 036
1995 | oil paint on canvas | 200 × 260 cm
In this landscape painting, Karel Appel explores the border between modern art and age-old tradition.
A master of spontaneous, abstract painting, Karel Appel was one of the main innovators of the Dutch visual arts in the 20th century. This painting was made at Villa Licia, his country estate in Tuscany. Here, Appel reinterprets a landscape painted by so many before him. Even with the jagged forms and unexpected colours, the rolling hills of Tuscany can still be made out through the trees.
