Medusa and Gongones of Lepcis Magna II

2005 | water colour and gold on rice paper | 67 × 78 cm

If you think security is tight today, back in classical antiquity they had Medusa.

This painting by Gerti Bierenbroodspot was inspired by the stone heads of Medusa placed above the entrance to a sacred area in the ruins of Lepcis Magna in Libya. In Greek mythology, anyone who looked upon the face of Medusa – with snakes for hair – would turn into stone.
