Wim Schuhmacher was fond of grey and silver hues. Here, he applies them to a woman he was fond of as well.
As from 1926, Schuhmacher (1894-1986) was accompanied on his travels by the woman who he painted here in 1931. A Russian teacher from Riga, in Latvia, Melitta Lass was living with Schuhmacher by that time.
