Jan van Tongeren spent 55 years of his life painting still lifes, which became progressively more abstract.
This scene has the effect of appearing very flat in some areas, such as the two visible legs of the table, and strangely three-dimensional in others. The green cloth in the middle creates a crease where the table seems to fold in on itself.
