Hester Schroor (1960)
Strawberry Time
1993 | tempera on cardboard | 130 × 85 cm
In her tempera paintings, Hester Schroor captures the soul of her subjects with a technique that’s as old as the ancient Egyptians.
Tempera is a type of paint made by mixing pigments with a binder, often egg yolk. It was used extensively up to 1500, when it was superseded by oil paint, and was the prime medium for everything from Egyptian burial art to European religious painting. Schroor takes existing people, often women, as the subject of her paintings. She tries to depict their inside: their pride and emotions.
