Barend Blankert presents a world full of loneliness and suspicion – sometimes even without portraying a single person.
Blankert creates that effect here by his use of colour and composition. Even the wall and the floor – the one light, pink and impressionistic, the other a dull mud colour – seem to pull away from each other. The prominent arms of the chair, especially from this perspective, create an enclosure.
