Artist Michael Berkhemer has no interest in copying nature. He uses shapes and colour to express it in all its manifestations instead.

Although Berkhemer was trained in painting realistic scenes, he gradually abandoned that to experiment with abstract forms. One of the strengths of his work lies in the fascinating, layered structure and intriguing use of colour – sometimes with gold leaf. It’s a subtle approach though, one which invites us to linger over his work to appreciate its depth.
