Untitled #6

2023 | oil on canvas | 200 × 120 cm

The artist is very interested in certain traditions within the art of painting, such as how a painting captures the light or creates the look of fabric. These have been important themes in the arts for centuries now – and for Caja Boogers too. He examines and questions them by presenting certain subjects again and again. He gives these themes a modern twist.

Boogers has put together a personal archive of images, such as of reworked surfaces, which he then analyses in search of new perspectives. For this Untitled #6, Boogers uses paint to suggest reflections. The dividing line placed in the middle of his work might also make you think of the doors of a lift. These are some of the ways in which the artists continues to play with our power of association and interpretation. He is able to influence how we see things by scratching on the surface of his work and creating shadow effects so that we really have to use our eyes. What is paint, and what is canvas?
