They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Does that also go for something’s importance?
Groot Maarslag is the name of a wierde – an artificial mound that protects the area in the event of high water – in the Dutch province of Groningen. In Pit van Loo's painting, what we do not see is that Groot Maarslag is only a handful of farms. He depicts the area expansively, with the landscape seeming to continue far beyond the boundaries of the painting.
