1990 | acrylic/oil on panel | 67 × 55 cm

Although the use of colour and perspective in this still life makes it look quite modern, Piet Sebens is actually a stickler for tradition.

Sebens always knew he wanted to paint in a realistic style. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he never went through an abstract period. Through the years, in fact, Sebens has actually become more attracted to the traditional rules of painting. That means starting with a sketch, properly preparing the panel or canvas. He feels there’s still so much we can learn from the past.
