TINKEBELL (1979)
Arena Candidus Solvay #70
2023 | soda ash, toxics on canvas | 100 × 160 cm
Picture a beach with gleaming white sands and turquoise waters. What does that make you feel?
It probably wouldn’t be the same feeling if you knew why the beach – in this case the Rosignano Solvay beach – is so white and the water is so blue. The beach here has been heavily polluted by the nearby Solvay factory. For years now, loads of toxic waste have been dumped into the water here. Combined with the pollutants emitted by the chimneys, that makes this place hazardous to everyone’s health.
To create her work of art, TINKEBELL applied the toxic substances from this area to canvas. Her message is that beauty can sometimes also have a dark side.
