To Josse Pyl, language is more than just communication. It’s a living presence that forms our grasp – literally and figuratively – of the world.

The little guy with a globe for a head is singing in the universal language of music: musical notation. Music is an important theme at ING, especially since it can function as a universal language. Notes of music are visible on the paving stones as a marking – just like the mark you leave when you bite into an apple, or with your foot when you walk in the sand. The question is: when is something just a mark, and when is it a letter that seeks to tell us something when it’s pronounced or sung?
