Lots of things can be going on in the works of art made by Melissa Gordon, just like here: a steering wheel, a sign, barricade tape, pages from a book, a chain, etc. What also really stands out is the sign with ‘VOTE’ on it. The sign points to an opening in the fence that dominates the painting. Behind that there’s a wave. Is the artist trying to tell us something?

The opening in the fence is not there for nothing. Fences are a frequent theme in Gordon’s work. They represent the obstacles that have been holding female artists back for ages now. Nevertheless, the artist is optimistic: there’s a large opening in the fence to the right.
