2006 | Crayon de couleur sur papier | 340 x 240 cm

Artist Anja Schrey works in a variety of media including drawing, painting, and performance.

At the heart of her work is her own body. She takes images of herself as studies and then reproduces her own image in proportions that are well beyond life size. This method is a means for the artist to both expose herself and distance herself from the viewer. Her colour pencil work is executed with hyper-realistic detail, almost like a photograph. The pose and body language are always ambiguous and distant, making it difficult to decipher the emotional state of the figure. Schrey’s work, read as a critique of the pressure and scrutiny that women confront today, is often labelled as feminist. The artist currently lives and works in Berlin.
